Beyoglu hour by hour: a one-day plan

  Breakfast at the hotel buffet, or hold out 25 minutes for Van Kahvalti Evi in Cihangir if it is a weekday; weekend queues there can eat an hour, as noted on the restaurants page.

  Walk the ten uphill minutes to Taksim Square while it is still quiet. Photograph the Republic Monument without crowds and look into the rebuilt AKM cultural center on the square's eastern edge.

  Enter Istiklal Street from the square. The first hour down the 1.4 km avenue is the calmest of the day: empty tram tracks, shopkeepers opening shutters, and the courtyard of St. Anthony of Padua before tour groups gather.
• 11:00
  Turn off into Cihangir for a specialty coffee around the Firuzaga Mosque, then drift down into Cukurcuma's antique lanes. Book lovers should reserve the Museum of Innocence here; details in the Cihangir and Galata guide.

  Lunch back near Galatasaray: Balkan Lokantasi for fast home-style trays, or Hatay Medeniyetler Sofrasi a block off the avenue for the Antakya kitchen.

  Continue down the lower avenue through Tunel and the Galata slopes to Galata Tower, about 25 minutes from Taksim at full walking pace, longer with browsing. The balcony view is the afternoon's reward.

  Descend to Karakoy for the waterfront: coffee in the old port streets, or push one tram stop to Kabatas if you want to bank the F1 funicular route for the Bosphorus day.
• 18:30
  Ride the Tunel funicular up from Karakoy and take the nostalgic tram or a slow walk back along Istiklal as the evening crowds build; the avenue is at its most cinematic in this light.
• 20:00
  Dinner in Nevizade Sokak's meyhane row through the fish market, Babel Ocakbasi among the verified names, or Zubeyir Ocakbasi on Bekar Sokak for charcoal-grilled meats. Arrive by 20:00 on weekends to skip waits.

If the weather turns

Rain does not cancel this day, it re-sequences it. Swap the Cihangir terraces for the covered passages along Istiklal, spend the wet hours in the Museum of Innocence or the galleries of the lower avenue, and move the Galata Tower balcony to whichever window of clearing the forecast offers. The metro leg of the day is unaffected, and a taxi from anywhere in Beyoglu back to Dolapdere Cd. No 33 is a short, cheap retreat when umbrellas fail.
