What Taksim Square is

Taksim is less a sight in itself than the place where the city's European side converges. The name comes from the Ottoman stone water distribution building, the taksim, that still stands at the head of Istiklal Street. At the center of the square rises the Republic Monument commemorating the founding of modern Turkey, the spot where national ceremonies and New Year crowds gather. Along the eastern edge, the rebuilt Ataturk Cultural Center (AKM) hosts opera, concerts and exhibitions, and its ticket hall is worth checking even on short stays.

On the north side lies Gezi Park, a small terraced green space that offers the nearest patch of shade and benches to the hotel. The square as a transit machine

For visitors, Taksim's real gift is connectivity. The M2 metro station under the square links Gayrettepe (for the M11 airport line) with the Golden Horn and the old city; the F1 funicular drops to Kabatas for ferries and the T1 tram; Havaist and Havabus airport shuttles use stops around the square; and the nostalgic tram departs from the mouth of Istiklal Street. Day and night rhythms

Early morning is the square's quietest hour, good for photographs of the monument without crowds. By midday the space fills with commuters, tour groups and simit sellers, and the energy spills into Istiklal Street, whose 1.4 km pedestrian run begins here. After dark the avenue's crowds thicken while the square itself calms down. Walking between Taksim and the hotel at night is a normal ten-minute route; like anywhere in a big city, keep to the main streets, Tarlabasi Boulevard's lit side included.
