Istiklal Street: a walking guide from Taksim

The shape of the walk

The avenue descends gently from Taksim to the Tunel district. Galata Tower's own visitor guide measures the full route from Taksim Square at about 1.5 km, a 25-minute walk including the short uphill finish to the tower, per galatatowertickets.com. Nobody walks it in 25 minutes on a first visit, though; the passages and side streets are the point. Plan two hours down and take the historic red tram or a taxi back up if your feet protest.

What to look for, top to bottom

Starting from the Taksim end, the first stretch is dominated by flagship stores and sweet shops; the Hafiz Mustafa branch near Taksim has second-floor seating with a view over the street, handy for a baklava pause. Midway down, duck into the arcades: Cicek Pasaji, the ornate 19th-century flower passage, and the adjoining fish market lane leading to Nevizade Sokak, the famous row of meyhane taverns. Across the avenue stands St. Anthony of Padua, the largest Catholic church in Istanbul, set back in a courtyard that offers a sudden pocket of quiet.

The lower third grows more bookish and Bohemian: record shops, the Galatasaray Lycee gates, and galleries in restored passages. The nostalgic tram

The red heritage tram shuttles the length of the avenue between Taksim and Tunel. It is charming, slow and usually full; ride it once for the experience, ideally uphill at the end of your walk, and use an Istanbulkart to board, as explained on the getting around page.

Eating on and off the avenue

The avenue itself favors quick bites; the memorable meals hide one street back. Timing your visit

Istiklal has no off switch, but it does have moods. Before 09:00 you share the street with delivery carts and can photograph the tram tracks empty. Friday and Saturday evenings are shoulder to shoulder from Taksim to Galatasaray.
